Using the Canon PowerShot A60 on Linux

Introduction

I purchased a Canon PowerShot A60 digital camera a week ago and immediately tried it out on Linux. I did not find any information about this. So I looked for other people's experience with other PowerShot models and followed these guidelines. It worked like a charm.

This document is just a very short note to be indexed in search engines so that other (interested) buyers of this fine camera will know that it's easily possible to use the PowerShot A60 with Linux.

gphoto

I work with gphoto to access this digital camera. gphoto comes with built-in drivers and works very well for my purposes. An introduction to the gphoto2 command line interface is available as is a GUI version. I have only tested the command line tool, but as the GUI is based on the same library it should work as well.

At the time of this writing I use the Debian package of gphoto2 version 2.1.1-3. It has a problem with the --list-files command but everything else works for me.

Movies

I am able to play the movies using MPlayer. MS Windows and Mac users may want to try Quicktime. Version 6.1 is able to play my recorded movies. The used codec is mjpg which seems not to be freely available for Windows Media Player.
